Sustainability concepts in Rep of Benin
Sustainability and protection of the environment have become buzzwords in recent years. Our earth is precious and we need to protect our natural resources and prevent further land filling and needless wastage. Western countries are waking up to the fact that the lives we live are not beneficial for future generations. Most of us are used to buying products and renewing them every 4-5 years such as household goods like fridges and washing machines. Our laptops, mobile phones and computers are treated in the same way with constant upgrading and introducing of better models. All of these second hand items are re-usable in Benin.
Our proposal is to re-condition and re-distribute these items. This helps the recipients directly, either in day to day living, or in accessing the internet and broadening their horizons. We also hope to create initiatives with local communities to make use of second hand materials creatively to encourage sustainability of the earth’s resources and promote recycling and prevent wastage and further contribution to global warming. For instance there are many companies forming worldwide at the moment that use recyclable materials to make bags or shoes or household objects and furniture.
This leads to a further objective of the promotion of recycling and sustainable waste management. Currently plastic shopping bags globally require millions of barrels of oil to manufacture and result in literally tons of litter and are responsible for the deaths of millions of seabirds and marine animals every year. Recycling will also be introduced as ways of providing employment along with long and short term improvement of the environment. We also aim to research projects into the use of renewable energy sources.
