INCREASE LITERACY RATES
Increase literacy rates
In a country where poverty is so rife and crippling education can understandably be a last priority and a remote dream for many people. Where people are keen to learn there is often a lack of access to educational facilities. Literacy levels are currently low, at around 30% in Benin and so the advancement of education is also an important objective for Project Umeh. There is a need to promote, sustain, and increase individual and collective knowledge and understanding of specific areas of study, skills and expertise. This is crucial to enable people to enhance their lives materially and culturally and to promote trade of skills and employment for financial reward. We wish to create facilities for willing participants to have the chance to learn to read and write, to learn English and French, broadening their horizons and increasing prospects of future further education and employment. This work is particularly important. In the spirit of “each one teach one” individuals could be trained to further teach others and therefore promote this trend for future generations.
A key factor for escaping poverty is to gain financial independence and be able to provide for the household successfully. This is vital for local communities and individuals to flourish. We propose to enable this by providing funding for start-up businesses. Many talented individuals with the skills to become successful entrepreneurs are thwarted by lack of finances and opportunities. We will also provide equipment and funds for training. We can provide mentoring and business supervision. Once businesses are running successfully we can provide further funding for business expansion. We can also encourage trade, mentoring, marketing and promotion between businesses to be mutually beneficial. (Need to be completed)
